The risk pool for insuring electronic gadgets against damage, loss and theft has been growing quickly over the past decades. However, with a focus on insuring new devices at the point of sale, insurers and insurance intermediaries are neglecting a significant part of the value opportunity – the billions of used devices in circulation. In this publication, we explore the value of implementing a screen crack and gadget insurance programme – with a focus on used devices. We highlight key success factors ranging from principles for product and journey design to how to use data and AI to seamlessly underwrite used gadgets in real-time – while controlling risks and fraud. This is not just theory – but a practitioner’s guide building on our and ZhongAn’s battleproven experience selling tens of millions of gadget insurance policies for new and used devices over the past years.
